The Atikonak River is a river in the southeast of the Labrador Peninsula in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .

River course

The Atikonak River is located in the basin of the Churchill River . Its origin is the 604  m high lake Lac Assigny . It initially flows through the eastern Lac Fleur-de-May and then flows another 40 km to the east before turning north. The Atikonak River flows through Atikonak Lake in a northerly direction. The Kepimits River flows into this from the west . Below Atikonak Lake, the Atikonak River flows another 40 km in a northerly direction before it flows into the Ossokmanuan Reservoir . Before that he passes Panchia Lake . Before the construction of the two reservoirs, Ossokmanuan Reservoir and Smallwood Reservoir, the Atikonak River flowed through Ossokmanuan Lake and Gabbro Lake in the lower reaches and finally flowed into Lobstick Lake . The length of the Atikonak River to its confluence with the Ossokmanuan Reservoir is about 270 km. In doing so, it drains an area of ​​15,450 km².

Hydrology

At the level above Panchia Lake , the mean discharge is 304 m³ / s. In June the river carries the largest amount of water with an average of 845 m³ / s.
