Atis Kronvalds , also called Kronvalda Atis in older writings , (born April 15, 1837 in the municipality of Bunka, Kurland Governorate ; † February 17, 1875 in Vecpiebalga ) was a Latvian linguist, writer and editor.

Life

Atis Kronvalds was born the son of a tailor and raised by Pastor Hermann Ehrenfest Georg Katterfeld (1797–1876) in Durbe . After finishing school in Durbe and Liepāja , he worked as a tutor. Kronvalds had to drop out of medical school in Berlin due to lack of money. Through the newspaper Pēterburgas Avīzes he became known for the positions of the young Latvians and henceforth one of their most prominent representatives. In 1865 he moved to Dorpat , where he published numerous writings and polemics against the German-Baltic intellectuals. In 1873 he became a teacher at the Vecpiebalga community school.

Through his writings, he enriched the Latvian language with numerous new word creations or the revival of older expressions.
