Atractoscion is a genus ofthe umberfishes family (Sciaenidae). It comprises two species : the white sea bass ( Atractoscion nobilis ), which is endemic to the western Pacific, and the African umberfish ( Atractoscion aequidens ), which is found in the eastern Atlantic , western Indian Ocean and western Pacific.

Atractoscion fish are elongated, laterally flattened spindle-shaped fish with a body length of up to about one and a half meters. The belly has a raised ridge . The mouth is at the end with a slightly protruding lower jaw and slightly bent downwards at the angles. The chin has no barbels or pores. The eye is medium in size. The edge of the front cover is smooth. The dorsal fin is long and has 10 to 11 hard rays in the front part and 21 to 32 soft rays in the rear part, separated by a clear notch. The pectoral and pelvic fins are short, with the former having a black spot on the inside. The anal fin has two short, thin hard rays and 9 to 10 soft rays. The caudal fin ends straight.
