Attilio Zuccagni-Orlandini

Attilio Zuccagni-Orlandini (* July 1784 in Fiesole , † November 25, 1872 in Florence ) was an Italian statistician, geographer, cartographer and dialectologist .

life and work

Giuseppe Orlandini was the nephew of the botanist Attilio Zuccagni and changed his name to Attilio Zuccagni-Orlandini. He studied medicine, traveled extensively in Italy, worked in the Ministry of Finance and from 1861 to 1872 he held the chair of statistics at the University of Florence .

His Corografia fisica, storica e statistica dell'Italia e delle sue isole in 12 volumes (Florence 1833–1845) including Atlante illustrativo ossia Raccolta dei principali monumenti italiani antichi, del medio evo e moderni in 3 volumes (Florence 1845), as well Ricerche statistiche sul Granducato di Toscana in 7 volumes (Florence 1848-1856).

In Romance studies, Zuccagni-Orlandini is known for his Raccolta di dialetti italiani con illustrazioni etnologiche (Florence 1864, Bologna 1975, 1986) with the exemplification of each dialect based on the respective translation of a dialogue between master and servant.

In Florence and Rome streets are named after him.
