Atypia (medicine)

In medicine, atypia describes a deviation from the norm, in the narrower sense a deviation from the norm of cells or tissues ( cell atypia or tissue atypia ).

Features of a cell atypia

• Polymorphism of cells and cell nuclei
• Different size of the cell nuclei (anisonucleosis)
• Nuclear hyperchromasia
• Enlargement of the nucleoli
• Shift of the core-plasma relation (in favor of the core)
• increased basophilia of the cytoplasm

The recognition of cell or tissue atypia is of great importance for the assessment of the dignity of tumors or suspicious tissues.
