Atypia (medicine)
In medicine, atypia describes a deviation from the norm, in the narrower sense a deviation from the norm of cells or tissues ( cell atypia or tissue atypia ).
Features of a cell atypia
- Polymorphism of cells and cell nuclei
- Different size of the cell nuclei (anisonucleosis)
- Nuclear hyperchromasia
- Enlargement of the nucleoli
- Shift of the core-plasma relation (in favor of the core)
- increased basophilia of the cytoplasm

The recognition of cell or tissue atypia is of great importance for the assessment of the dignity of tumors or suspicious tissues.
