description
The body of water is located south of the center of Hamburg-Harburg . A 250 meter long dam dams the Mühlenbach, which rises about 4 kilometers south of Harburg. The outer mill pond has a north-south extension of about 1 kilometer in length and an average width of 250 meters. Most of it drains underground via the Engelbek into the Seevekanal . The total water area is 25.9 hectares. The Harburg City Park is located on the south and west banks of the Außenmühlenteich, while the MidSommerland adventure pool is an indoor and outdoor pool complex on the east bank .
history
The pond goes back to the Butenmühle built in 1564/65 by Otto II . At that time there was a compulsory meal for the surrounding Geest villages . In the inheritance register from 1667, the Außenmühlenteich is mentioned as the largest fish pond in the Harburg district. The eponymous mill, which was located roughly in the middle of the dam, was demolished in 1930.
The Außenmühlenteich is a recreational destination today.
