Otto II (Braunschweig-Harburg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Otto II von Braunschweig-Harburg , also known as the Younger or the Famous (born September 25, 1528 in Harburg , † October 26, 1603 in Harburg) was the owner of the Harburg estate from 1549 until his death .

Life

Otto was the eldest son of Duke Otto I of Braunschweig-Harburg (1495–1549) from his marriage to Meta von Campe († 1580). Otto received a princely education.

The succession of Otto as Duke of Braunschweig-Harburg was not recognized by the House of Braunschweig-Lüneburg due to the unequal marriage of his parents. Favored by Emperor Ferdinand I, Otto renewed his claims several times and finally a settlement was reached with Lüneburg in 1560 and Otto was confirmed as successor in the Harburg rule, which was expanded to include Moisburg . Otto continued his father's construction activities at Harburg Castle, which he had converted into a princely residence and finally moved into in 1551. In 1560 the expansion of the castle chapel began.

Special charges and tax increases were ordered for the establishment of Otto's court, which led to dissatisfaction. The population shrank through multiple plague epidemics between 1561 and 1577. The settlement of Jews and other Christian faiths was not tolerated. To promote the salt trade, Otto had a salt store built in Harburg with the permission of the Lüneburg government, but this did not bring the expected success.

Otto II signed the Concord Formula from 1577 and the Concord Book from 1580.

Marriages and offspring
