Auce (German: Alt-Autz ) is a city in the south-west of Latvia and is located near the border with Lithuania .

In 1426 an Owcze was first mentioned in writing. In 1576 Alt-Autz was separated from the estates of the first owner, Johann von Bremen. There was a church since 1667. The manor buildings were greatly expanded in the 19th century. In 1920 there was an experimental station of the University of Latvia here . In 1924 Auce was granted city rights. In 2016, 2712 inhabitants were registered.

Auces novads

The Auces novads administrative district was created in 2009 through a merger with five surrounding rural communities. In 2010, there were 8,564 residents.

People who worked on site

  • Kurt Tucholsky (1890-1935), German journalist and writer, did military service from 1915 to 1917 in the Artillery Aviation School East I in Alt-Autz, where he met his second wife, Mary Gerold (1898-1987).
  • Erhard Milch (1892–1972), German officer, was adjutant to the school commander of the Artillery Flying School East I in the late autumn of 1916 with the rank of first lieutenant.
