The University of Auckland ( Maori : Te Whare Wānanga o Tāmaki Makaurau ) is a state university in New Zealand 's largest city, Auckland . It was founded in 1883 as Auckland University College and part of what was then the University of New Zealand and, as an independent university since 1961, has eight faculties with more than 40,000 students at six locations (as of 2011). This makes the educational institution the largest university in the island state.

history

The college was founded as a part of the federal association University of New Zealand and began teaching in 1883 with 95 students and four professors from Oxford and Cambridge recruited for chemistry, mathematics, natural sciences and classical studies. In 1901 there were 156 students who were trained mainly in part-time models in law. Little research was done at the University of Auckland until the 1930s. The college got four additional chairs in 1934 and this additional capacity led to institutional growth in both teaching and research. The university network of the University of New Zealand was dissolved in 1961 in favor of the university landscape that had existed since then, and the University of Auckland became an independent institution.
