Eurydice (wife of Philip II)
Eurydice (original name Audata ) was a 4th century BC Living noble Illyrian woman, probably daughter or granddaughter of Bardylis . She became the first or second wife of the Macedonian king Philip II.
The Illyrians formed in the first half of the 4th century BC. A powerful empire that posed a threat to Macedonia. Illyrian tribes invaded Macedonia several times and Perdiccas III. , the older brother of Philip II, was 360/359 BC Died in the fight against Bardylis. Soon afterwards Philip II took over the rule and first sought a negotiation with Bardylis. As a result, he married the Illyrian princess Audata, who took the name Eurydice after their wedding. This name change probably happened for dynastic reasons, as she was Philip's main wife for a short time. But the Macedonian king had quickly consolidated his power to such an extent that he was able to decisively defeat Bardylis in a battle (358 BC). Soon after, Olympias became his main wife.
Eurydice gave birth to Philip II a daughter Kynane , whose daughter Adea also took the name Eurydice .
