Carl Theodor (us) Pachelbel ( Charles Theodore Pachelbel , baptized November 24, 1690 in Stuttgart ; † September 17, 1750 in Charleston , South Carolina ) was a German organist and composer who lived in the American colonies for a long time. His father Johann Pachelbel and his brother Wilhelm Hieronymus Pachelbel were also musicians and composers.

Life

Pachelbel, son of the famous Johann Pachelbel , grew up in Stuttgart (1690–1692), Gotha (1692–1695) and Nuremberg (from 1695), his father's places of employment. He probably also trained him in composition and playing keyboard instruments. In 1717 he must have stayed in Augsburg - possibly for a longer period of time. He most likely emigrated to North America via England in 1730 and initially lived in Boston . In 1733 he was appointed to the Trinity Church in Newport as the first organist , after he had previously been involved in the installation of the new organ from England. He worked here until 1735. In 1736 he moved to Charleston, South Carolina and a year later married Hannah Atkins Poivetin, with whom he had a son, Charles. In 1736/37 he gave several concerts of vocal and instrumental music in New York City and Charleston. He is one of the co-founders of a North American musical life that is based on European cultural tradition. In 1740 he became organist at St Philip's Church in Charleston. In 1749 he planned to open a singing school, which he could no longer realize.

Only a few of his compositions have survived: two vocal works that were written in Germany, the Magnificat in C major and a concerto “Come here to me all”, as well as the aria “God of Sleep for whom I languish” (Peter Pelham Manuscript, 1744) and a minuet in C major for harpsichord (1739).
