Uditore del Papa

Uditore del Papa , Latin Auditor Papae or Auditor Sanctissimi , Italian Uditore di Sua Santità , Uditore Santissimo , German  Auditor of the Pope or Auditor of His Holiness , was a title within the Papal Family .

This prelate, selected from the dignitaries of the Curia , held the third highest rank of the papal family. As a rule, he was a proven scholar of canon law . Due to papal privilege, he had authority to take all proceedings before ecclesiastical courts of justice. At the same time he was examiners of the bishops in canon law by virtue of his office . His official seat was like that of the Pope in the Quirinal Palace .

By a decree of Pope Gregory XVI. on October 5, 1831, the office of Auditor Papae was revoked and his duties were transferred to the Apostolic Signature .
