The origin of the church was Romanesque style. The reconstruction and partly new construction of the church took place from 1653 to 1656. The choir and the lower part of the tower were included from a late Gothic previous building. The nave, south porch and upper part of the tower were newly built. In 1867 a thorough renovation took place. In 1970, conversions were made to expand the use of the Lobeda new building area. Inside the church there are simple sandstone epitaphs of two pastors , and richly decorated epitaphs in cheerful colors by Christiane Sophie von Ziegesar (née von Griesheim) and Amalie Christiane von Griesheim (née von Wolfersdorf). The crucifix and baptismal frame are made of artistic ceramic.

The small organ is located in the southern extension for the mansion chair. It was built around 1970 by master organ builder Günter Bahr from Weimar and rebuilt in 1987 by Wolfgang Nußbücker (Plau am See).

There are memorial plaques on the church in memory of the bird pastor Christian Ludwig Brehm and the relationship between Sylvie von Ziegesar and Goethe .

In the cemetery

To the north of the church are the simple graves of the lords of Ziegesar and von Helldorf .
