Uprising in the Rif

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The uprising in the Rif was a rebellion from October 1958 to February 1959 in the Rif Mountains in Morocco against the government of Mohammed V.

The return of the Berber leader Abd el-Krim was also called for in an 18-point program . In December 1958, the government officially declared Abd el-Krim a national hero and awarded an honorary pension. However, Abd el-Krim did not return to his homeland and justified this with the presence of European troops in Morocco. The uprising intensified in the winter of 1958/59.

The uprising was put down under the leadership of Hassan II and Mohammed Oufkir with 20,000 men using napalm , Willy Pete and cluster bombs . The coordination of the government troops was the responsibility of officers of the French armed forces .
