The Augsburg University , formerly Augsburg College is a liberal arts-oriented university of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America , headquartered in Minneapolis , Minnesota , USA .
history
It was founded in Marshall , Wisconsin in 1869 as a theological seminary and was named Augsburg Seminary in memory of the Augsburg Confession . In 1872 it moved to Minneapolis. The first undergraduate students were accepted in the fall of 1874 and graduated for the first time in the spring of 1879. In 1893 the Friends of Augsburg were formed , from which the Lutheran Free Church emerged in 1897 . The first women were admitted to university in 1921.
Until 1942 the name was Augsburg Seminary , then it was renamed Augsburg College and Theological Seminary , which name had been used informally since the 1920s.
After the merger of the Lutheran Free Church with the American Lutheran Church , the Theological Seminary was incorporated into the Luther Seminary in Saint Paul . The official name of the institution, which has since been a Liberal Arts College , was now Augsburg College , later Augsburg University . Students can obtain a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in a four-year course . In addition, a master's degree can be achieved in six subjects .
Sports
The sports teams call themselves the Auggies . The ice hockey team takes part in the US college championship .
