August Diem

August Diem (born September 19, 1848 in Herisau , † June 9, 1895 in Herisau; resident in Schwellbrunn) was a Swiss entrepreneur and politician from the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Life

August Diem was a son of the textile printer Johann Ulrich Diem and Anna Diem, nee Nef. In 1876 he married Amalie Zürcher, daughter of the embroidery manufacturer Johann Ulrich Zürcher.

As a boy, August Diem did child labor as a "hanging boy" in a textile printing shop . Then he attended secondary school on his own initiative and completed a commercial apprenticeship at the textile trading company JG Nef & Co. in Herisau. In 1874 he became self-employed and founded the embroidery manufacturing and export company August Diem in Herisau, which was renamed August Diem & Lutz in 1884 and Bächtold, Diem & Lutz in 1887. In 1881 he founded the first Swiss colored paper factory instead of a bleaching / twisting mill , of which he was a partner from 1874. This factory was renamed Diem & Oberhänsli in 1883 and operated under the name of Walke Buntpapierfabrik Herisau AG from 1934. In 1883 the Schiffli embroidery factory Diem & Hohl (closed in 1889) and the twisting Diem & Frischknecht with a branch in Urnäsch followed . From 1880 to 1882 and later again from 1887 to 1891 August Diem was councilor of Herisau.
