August Fischer ( 1798 in Freiberg - 1865 in Berlin ) was a German opera singer ( bass , baritone ).

Life

Fischer received his first singing lessons from his uncle, the vice-principal Fischer and his son Christian Wilhelm Fischer (1786-1859), who also became a well-known opera singer and director.

Without finishing high school, he began his stage career in Dessau in 1816/17. He made his debut as "sacrificial priest" in Salieri's Axur and "Daniel" in Der Wasserträger ( Les deux journées ) by Luigi Cherubini . In Dessau he married the actress Gerlach.

He then changed engagements repeatedly until he finally managed to appear in Vienna as “Sarastro” at the Vienna Court Opera. He stayed there until 1827, during which time he took lessons from Giuseppe Ciccimara . From 1827 to 1829 he was at the Deutsches Theater Budapest and then again for a season at the Vienna Court Opera. In 1830 he moved to Darmstadt, where after the closure of this stage in 1835 he moved to the Königstädtische Theater in Berlin.

In 1836 he was a guest at the Munich Court Opera. In 1837 he was appointed by Gasparo Spontini to the Berlin Court Opera, after he had performed there as “Sarastro”, as “Figaro” in the Barber of Seville and as “Telasko” in Spontini's Fernand Cortes . He stayed there until the end of his career in 1851.
