Life

August Halbe was born on March 17, 1912 in Ottfingen in the Archdiocese of Paderborn as the sixth of ten children. In 1932 he graduated from high school in Attendorn . After studying theology, he was on 7 January 1940 in Paderborn for priests ordained.

Halbe made his first pastoral experiences in Groß Ammensleben . In 1940 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht medical service in Tapiau (East Prussia) and was taken prisoner by the Soviets in Romania in 1944. In his book 5 Years as a Priest in War in the Urals , Halbe later described his memories of the war years. From April 15, 1950 he was chaplain in the parish of St. Franziskus in Bochum-Weitmar. There he drove the construction of a votive church , the Heimkehrer-Dankeskirche in the district of Mark-Neuling, which was consecrated on December 12, 1959 to the patronage "Holy Family - Homecoming from Egypt". On January 6, 1960, he was appointed pastor of this church. For many people, the Church of Thanksgiving for Returners is a memorial for peace and reconciliation among the peoples. On July 6, 1969 Pastor Halbe had to resign from his pastor due to health reasons. His successor as pastor of the Heimkehrer-Dankeskirche was Pastor Helmut-Martin Jägersberg († 2010). After the years in Weitmar, August Halbe worked as a pastor in Meinerzhagen for another five years .
