August Janisch

August Janisch OCist (born July 6, 1942 in Sankt Ruprecht an der Raab , Styria , Austria ) is a Roman Catholic clergyman .

Live and act

August Janisch studied theology in Graz and became a member of the Catholic student association K.Ö.St.V. Babenberg Graz and was ordained a priest in 1966 . From 1980 to 2000 he was pastor in the East Styrian parish Hartberg in Styria. He was also active as the diocesan director of the Papal Missionary Organization, Missio Styria . In 1990, Bishop Johann Weber of Graz was appointed consistorial councilor .

Presumably because of his commitment to refugees , he became the first victim of a letter bomb on December 3, 1993 by the bomb bomber Franz Fuchs . In 1995 he received the recognition award of the Bruno Kreisky Prize for services to human rights .

In 2000 he completed a sabbatical year in Rein , the oldest existing Cistercian monastery in the world, and then the joined congregation of the Cistercians in. There he made his profession in 2005 . He is a board member of “Klösterreich”, an interest group of the monasteries, monasteries and orders of Austria.

From 2018, Father Janisch will lead to the rediscovered and revitalized medieval 110 m long water tunnel through the Ulrichsberg . It dates from the 12th century and was used to supply the monastery with water by means of a horizontal channel from a small stream in the neighboring valley. In the former open channels there are now plastic pipes with a diameter of around 20 cm.

Janisch now devotes himself to researching the history of the Rein Abbey and in particular the library in the Abbey.
