Life

Krönig was the son of Pastor Gottlieb Kroenig and his wife Wilhelmine, née Campe. After graduating from high school, he first studied oriental languages in Bonn for three semesters from 1839, before moving on to physics, chemistry and mathematics at the University of Berlin from 1840 , where he also received his doctorate in 1845 on chromic salts . He then worked at the Cöllnischen Realgymnasium, from 1851 at the Royal Realschule at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Gymnasium in Berlin. In 1864 he was awarded the title of professor, but in the same year he had to retire due to illness. In 1851 he self-published the Journal for Physics and Physical Chemistry of Foreign Countries in full overviews , which only existed for one year. From 1853 he edited the annual journal Progress in Physics published by the Berlin Physical Society . In 1856 he developed the kinetic theory of gases and became a pioneer of statistical mechanics and thermodynamics alongside Rudolf Clausius , James Clerk Maxwell and Ludwig Boltzmann .
