August Ludwig Schwenzer

August Ludwig Schwenzer (born December 9, 1847 in Löwenstein ; † January 9, 1934 ) was a German sculptor and restorer.

Life

August Ludwig Schwenzer was a son of the lathe operator Ludwig Schwenzer (1801–1876) and his wife Magdalene nee. Stettner (1808-1874). Four of his six siblings died early. The eldest brother Ludwig (1835–1914) learned the lathe trade and took over the parental business, while August and his older brother Karl Schwenzer (1843–1904) received artistic and craft training. August attended secondary school in Löwenstein, then completed an apprenticeship as a turner and plasterer, then an apprenticeship as a sculptor in Stuttgart. From 1866 to 1869 he attended art school with Professor Wagner, then the Dresden Art Academy , where he was a master student of Ernst Hähnel . He then worked in Vienna with Professor Kaspar von Zumbusch , and later in Berlin, Sofia and Esslingen. After receiving prizes for his work as early as 1868, he carried out numerous public commissions such as monuments, figures of princes and church decorations. King Wilhelm I of Württemberg appointed him professor. Schwenzer taught in Esslingen, and his circle of friends included Ernst Hähnel, Robert Henze , Wilhelm von Kaulbach and Moritz von Schwind . He was married to Marie Sofie Chimani from 1880. The marriage had four children. Schwenzer was buried in Esslingen.
