Friedrich August Morgenstern (born December 2, 1772 in Magdeburg ; † April 5, 1844 there ) was a German merchant and member of parliament.

Life

He was the son of the city physician Friedrich Simon Morgenstern (1727–1782), who had moved from Halle to Magdeburg and his wife Johanna Katharina Morgenstern , née. Brömme, author of a text later known as the “Magdeburg Cookbook”, “Lessons for a young woman who wants to do the kitchen and housekeeping herself, given from her own experience by a housemother”. Karl Morgenstern was his brother. Morgenstern attended the Magdeburg School of Trade and then did a commercial apprenticeship with the businessman Johann W. Faulwasser, who (together with Mayor Blankenbach, Hofrat Koepcken and others had been the godfather of Morgenstern). After 10 years at Faulwasser, he started his own business in 1797 together with his friend, businessman Paul Weber. Morgenstern & Co., a company trading in colonial goods, domestic products, wine, indigo and dyed goods, as well as shipping and commission business, was quite successful. In 1805 Morgenstern's working capital was around 45,000 and Weber's was 13,000 thalers. At that time the company had 10 employees. When Weber left the company in 1811, Morgenstern's share was around 55,000 thalers. In 1841 his son August Theodor Morgenstern (born January 12, 1815 in Magdeburg; † June 1, 1867 there) joined the company as a partner. After the death of his father, he continued the company.

Morgenstern earned special merits as a member of the Association of the Merchants' Union in the preparation of the statutes for the formation of the Magdeburg Corporation of Merchants. In the first session of the Provincial Parliament of the Province of Saxony in 1825, he was a member of the city of Magdeburg as a representative of the state of the cities in the Magdeburg electoral district. In the second session in 1827 he was elected as deputy. In 1831 he was appointed Bavarian trade consul in Magdeburg.
