August Roterberg (born April 5, 1867 in Hamburg ; † 1928 or 1939 ) was a German magician living in the USA .

Roterberg emigrated to the USA around 1883. After training to be a cabinet maker, he began a wizarding mail order business from Chicago around or before 1893 . From 1894 he ran his own magic business. With Roterberg the era of publications written for magicians in English began.

In 1908 he sold the mail order business to the mentalist Ralph W. Read (pseudo Calosto), in 1916 he gave his shop to Arthur and Carl Felsman. Roterberg moved to California , where he lived until his death.

Red Mountain, a conjuror (Engl. Sleight of hand ), invented the proliferating thimbles. The so-called Excelsior Ball Trick with multiplying billiard balls ( Multiplying Billiard Balls , 1898) also came from him.

Roterberg today has a place in the Hall of Fame of the Society of American Magicians .
