politics

The special political talent of the young lawyer, who had already joined the Social Democratic Party in Rorschach, was recognized early on. From 1922 until his election to the government council, he was President of the Social Democratic Party of the Canton of Thurgau . He was able to crown his municipal career as early as 1928. As a candidate for combat by the Social Democratic Party, which had won the majority in Arbon in 1925, he succeeded in defeating the incumbent Arbon mayor and mayor. He stayed in office for 13 years, and during this time he had a major impact on the “red Arbon”. The economic crisis was fought by emergency work (correction of the bleaching streams and support for the lido, which was created in community work). The gasworks could be sold with the consent of the sovereign and a favorable gas supply contract was concluded with the gasworks St. Gallen , which the municipality of Arbon continued to share in the proceeds from gas sales by means of a concession fee. The Huber'sche factory on the main street in the old town was acquired and converted into a town house. In 1938 the local administration led by Roth intervened successfully with the government council, when the constant provocations of the Nazis, especially the National Socialist masters in the war economics departments of the Saurer company, increased.

At the cantonal level, Roth, a member of the Grand Council since 1923, was a member of the cantonal bank management from 1928 to 1941. In 1941 August Roth became a member of the cantonal government. He was the first social democrat in the Thurgau executive. In his department he was responsible for construction, insurance and guardianship. Roth made an outstanding contribution to the preservation of monuments, regional planning (today spatial planning) and road construction. His last work was the Thur Bridge near Eschikofen, opened in 1954, which replaced the old wooden bridge from 1837.

From 1928 to 1931, from 1935 to 1941 and finally from 1947 to 1951, August Roth was a member of the National Council.
