Carl August Voller

Carl August Voller (born October 31, 1842 in Elberfeld (now part of Wuppertal ), † July 7, 1920 in Hamburg ) was a German physicist, professor and politician .

Life

After attending elementary school in Elberfeld, Voller learned a commercial profession and worked in this area until 1868. On the side he prepared for the school leaving examination, which he successfully passed in 1869. From 1868, Voller studied in Göttingen and then in Berlin. In 1872 he became a teacher of mathematics and natural sciences at the Glitzaschen private school in Hamburg. In 1873 he received his doctorate. In 1875 he got a job as a trial candidate at the Johanneum Realgymnasium . He proved himself and became a senior teacher there, where from 1879 he headed the Physical Cabinet, which on his initiative became the State Physical Laboratory in 1885 . Associated with this was teaching. He carried the title of professor. When the University of Hamburg was founded in 1919, he was made honorary professor of the natural sciences faculty as thanks for his help in founding the university. The State Physical Laboratory became part of the university as the State Physical Institute with Peter Paul Koch (1879–1945) as director, who succeeded Voller.

He was editor of the negotiations of the Natural Science Association of Hamburg-Altona . From 1907 to 1913 Voller belonged to the Hamburg citizenship as a member of the right-wing parliamentary group .

Honors

In 1890 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .
