August Wilhelm Grube (writer)

August Wilhelm Grube (born December 16 or 17, 1816 in Wernigerode ; † January 28, 1884 in Bregenz ) was a German pedagogue and writer who became known primarily for his publications on arithmetic methods and popular works.

August Wilhelm Grube was born the son of a master tailor in Wernigerode. After visiting the high school in his hometown, he went to the teachers' college in Weißenfels . After graduation, he began his service as an assistant teacher at the community school in Merseburg in 1836 , but gave up this position due to sickness.

From 1840 to 1843 he worked as a tutor for the district president and later Prussian interior minister, Adolf Heinrich Graf von Arnim-Boitzenburg . He then worked as a private tutor with Baron von Kleist in Bohemia, and from 1848 on permanently with a factory owner in Hard ( Vorarlberg ). In the neighboring city of Bregenz, he retired in 1866 to work as a freelance writer . In 1868 he was one of the founding members of the Association for the History of Lake Constance and its Surroundings .

Grube remained unmarried and bequeathed his fortune to his hometown, which named a street after him. There are also memorial plaques for him on his birthplace at Büchtingenstrasse 27 and on the benefactor's fountain on the market square in Wernigerode and on his retirement home in Bregenz (Vorarlberg).
