August Ziegler

August Ziegler , Dr. and Ökonomierat (born October 22, 1885 in Marktbreit ; † March 3, 1937 in Würzburg) was a German oenologist .

Life

Ziegler studied agriculture and chemistry in Munich. Here he joined the Corps Saxo-Thuringia . After completing his studies, he worked as an agricultural expert in Togo , having specialized in plant breeding.

From 1921 he was head of the main office for grapevine breeding in the Bavarian State Institute for Wine and Horticulture in Würzburg. During this time he played a decisive role in the refinement of the Müller-Thurgau grape and bred the Rieslaner grape, which is still widespread in Franconia today .

Ziegler expanded the so-called vine cultivation centers in Franconia and the Palatinate , which were responsible for vine selection, vine propagation and cloning testing.
