The Auguste-Stift is a building that is located at Cottbuser Feigestrasse 1. It was built by the Auguste Foundation until 1900 , which was established in 1897 with the inheritance of Auguste Löber , nee Feige. It served as a dormitory for single, needy women of the middle class. In the GDR it was used as a retirement home. Today it houses a rehab center. The building is now a listed building .

history

In January 1897, Auguste Löber bequeathed all of her assets to the city of Cottbus to establish a social foundation. The house on the street named after her father's family was built as part of the foundation and was named Auguste-Stift. The aim was to help the innocent Protestant women from the bourgeoisie, born in Cottbus, through free living space and financial support.

The four-storey building was built on an undeveloped site belonging to the Feige family between 1898 and 1900 based on a design by the Cottbus city architect Josef H. Richter. The company "United Porphyry Quarries on the Rochlitzer Berge" and the workshop of the sculptor and plasterer Walter Adler in Cottbus were responsible for the plastic architectural jewelry . The painting was done by G. Neumann, the colored glazed windows were created by P. Förster, both Berlin handicraft businesses. 24 two-room apartments, a dining room, a prayer room and utility rooms were created, as well as a garden.

The building was taken over by the city of Cottbus in 1954/1955 and converted into a nursing home. Comprehensive modernization took place from 1985 to 1987, with the breakdown of small apartments, with large parts of the original furnishings being removed. The doors from the construction period, the colored glazing, panels and the bronze plaque with the portrait of the donor disappeared. After reunification, the property and the house were transferred back, and in 1998 a board of trustees consisting of seven members was founded again. The building was rented and the foundation can continue to perform its duties with the income. From October 2002 to August 2003 the tenant renovated the building, a 900 m² two-storey extension was built on the front of the courtyard. It houses a swimming and exercise pool, changing and sauna rooms as well as rooms for medical training therapy. The entire area of today's rehabilitation center "Reha-Vita" was equipped to be handicapped accessible, both components are connected by a covered corridor. The adjacent park was planted with trees and flowers, and a volleyball court was created at the end of the complex.

The hipped and saddle roofs of different heights with bat dormers and decorated chimney heads, pushed into one another, create a striking picture. Furthermore, windows of different sizes with bars and bars as well as rich building decor in the neo-renaissance style make the house interesting. The narrow porch of the staircase under a hunched gable is decorated with figural stucco relief and an extension with a main portal, the date of construction can be seen in the lavishly decorated front made of porphyry tuff. On the eastern part of the monastery, the gables are captivating with their half-timbering framed in green with colored material.
