Auguste Agassiz

Auguste Agassiz (born April 15, 1809 in Môtier (municipality of Haut-Vully ), † February 25, 1877 in Lausanne ) was a Swiss watchmaker and entrepreneur . He founded Longines' predecessor company .

Live and act

Agassiz was a son of the Protestant pastor of Môtier in the canton of Friborg , his brother was the famous naturalist Louis Agassiz . First he completed an apprenticeship at the Mayor-Fornachon bank in Neuchâtel . In 1832 he moved to Saint-Imier and joined Henri Raiguel's watch trade. Agassiz and Raiguel founded Raiguel Jeune & Cie. Together with Florian Morel in 1833 . for the manufacture and sale of utility watches. When Raiguel left the company in 1838, it traded as Agassiz & Cie. and started exporting to the United States .

The Agassiz watches were considered to be particularly durable and quickly acquired a good reputation and a high level of awareness. From 1847 Agassiz was the sole owner, in 1846 and 1847 he also served as mayor of Saint-Imier. He retired to Lausanne for health reasons and in 1854 handed over management of the company to his nephew Ernest Francillon , who had the Longines watch factory built in 1866.
