Auguste François Le Jolis (born December 1, 1823 in Cherbourg ; † August 20, 1904 there ) was a French botanist ( lichenologist , algologist , bryologist ). Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Le Jol. "

Live and act

His main occupation was a businessman (in the family company which he ran until 1888) and a judge at the commercial court in Cherbourg (chairman 1882 to 1888). He is known as a collector and expert in particular for algae.

He was a member of the Leopoldina (1853) and numerous other scientific societies (academies in Philadelphia, Madrid, Accademia dei Lincei, Moscow natural research society, Société philomatique de Paris and others). In 1842 he became a member of the Linnaeus Society of Normandy and in 1851 he was with Emmanuel Liais (1826–1900) and Théodose du Moncel (1821–1884) founder and director of the Société nationale des sciences naturelles et mathématiques de Cherbourg . You edited the journal Mémoires de la Société nationale des sciences naturelles et mathématiques de Cherbourg .

Honors

The algae genus Lejolisia ( Rhodophyceae , Ceramiaceae) by Jean-Baptiste Édouard Bornet (1828–1911) is named in his honor.
