The Augustinian Congregation Zwartsters van Halle is a Roman Catholic women's order that was founded in the Belgian city ​​of Halle in 1858 . The religious community is organizationally the religious family of Cellitinnen and Zwartzusters affiliated.

history

The city of Halle (Belgium) acquired part of the building from the former Jesuit monastery in 1853 to build a hospital here. At the request of the mayor, the management of this new hospital was to be taken over by the women's order of the " Zwarte befers van Dendermonde ". On November 18, 1854, the first two nuns began their work, they were joined by other sisters.

independence

On June 22nd, 1857, these sisters applied to the Archbishop of Mechlin-Brussels , Cardinal Engelbert Sterckx , for their community to be independent . Following this request, on March 31, 1858, they were raised to a congregation under episcopal law . The now independent community initially lived in a small rented house and was able to lay the foundation stone for their monastery on April 12, 1898 . The expansion of the order had begun in 1868, sisters were sent to Puurs and later to Wilrijk .

Mergers

On December 26, 1927, the community was united with the Augustinian order, in 1959 the congregation of the Franciscanesses van OLV van het H. Hart joined them, followed in 1964 by the state maidservant van Maria with the mother house in Erps-Kwerps . Thus the community now consisted of 135 sisters, who were spread over 11 houses. In 1974 some sisters joined the congregation of the Befers van Maria in Leuven , in 1983 the order consisted of seven convents with a total of 75 sisters. By 1997 this number had decreased to 48 sisters.

anniversary

In 2008 the Augustinessen Zwartsters van Halle celebrated their 150th anniversary. They celebrated this day as a community of 31 sisters. On the occasion of this day celebrated Cardinal Godfried Danneels on 30 March 2008, a High Mass followed by Blessing of all sisters.
