Augustus Applegath

Augustus Applegath (* 1788 ; † 1871 ) was a British inventor.

In 1816 he and the mechanic Edward Cowper got a patent for bending stereos . Between 1847 and 1850 they built the first working high-speed letterpress presses . In this press, the printing form was mounted on a vertical cylinder . The so-called Rotary Press could print 8,000 sheets per hour and was initially built for the Times . In addition, Applegath was the first to carry out so-called table coloring , which was mainly used in the USA, Great Britain and France. He also invented the four-cylinder press with Cowper in 1828 , which could print up to 4,000 sheets an hour.
