Augustus Weismann

Augustus F. Weismann (born March 6, 1809 in Großheppach , † March 2, 1884 in New York ) was a pharmacist and politician .

Life

Weismann attended the Latin school in Schorndorf . He then learned pharmacy and worked as an assistant in Stuttgart , Cologne and Saarlouis . In 1832 he emigrated to the United States and moved to New York . There he opened a "shop" where he sold medicines and practiced as a doctor. He took on HA Cassebeer as a partner and opened two more branches. In 1865 he handed the business over to his son Augustus.

In the United States he gained prominence as a politician. In 1871 he became a New York Senator and campaigned for the introduction of the Pharmacy Law for New York City. He was a member of the German Society of New York. He was also a co-founder of various German companies, such as the bank and the hospital. From 1855 to 1858 he was President of the New York German Pharmacists' Association.
