Aulonia albimana is a species of the genus Aulonia in the family of wolf spiders (Lycosidae). It is one of only two species in the genus.
description
Aulonia albimana is one of the smaller wolf spiders. It reaches a maximum body size of 4.5 millimeters. The front body ( prosoma ) is dark brown to black in color and has a thin white border. The rear body ( opisthosoma ) is also dark brown to dark gray in color. There is a thin white center line at its front end.
The legs are evenly colored light brown, but the thighs of the foremost pair of legs are black.
The most striking feature of the species are the white central limbs of the pedipalps , which are otherwise colored black. This feature is present in both sexes and allows easy identification of the species.
Way of life
Like all wolf spiders, Aulonia albimana lives on the ground and in the herb layer . However , it is a specialty among the Central European wolf spiders: it is the only species that builds a safety net. It is constructed like a funnel net and is usually built in a cushion of moss . However, the spider, especially the male, does not always stay in the web, but often roams around freely.
Occurrence and distribution
Aulonia albimana is preferred in drier habitats with little vegetation, e.g. B. on dry grass, inland dunes and stony wasteland. It is widespread throughout Central Europe and is usually not uncommon.
