Aulonocara ( Gr . "Aulos" = tube pit "kara" = head (refers to the sense pits on the head)) is a cichlid - genus , which is endemic in Malawi in East Africa lives.

features

Aulonocara species grow to be between 8 and 18 centimeters long. They have a typical perch shape with a compact body and beefy, pointed-mouthed head. The dominant body colors of many Aulonocara species are blue and yellow. The genus is characterized by many small sensory pores on the back of the head, which, similar to the side line, can perceive pressure stimuli and serve for orientation and foraging. The food is sought in the sandy ground.

Way of life

All Aulonocara species are mouth brooders and most species reproduce in the rock littoral or in the transition zone to the sand littoral, where the males form territories in the center of which is usually a cave. Some species are adapted to life in the sand littoral. The eggs are rich in yolks, the fry hatch at water temperatures of 28–29 ° C after 17 to 19 days.

Aulonocara species are caught and bred as aquarium fish. Many species hybridize with each other under aquarium conditions, which must be taken into account when maintaining the aquarium.
