The barbel gudgeon ( Aulopyge huegelii ) is a species of fish from the order of the carp-like . The species is an isolated endemic and was previously assigned to the gudgeons , but is now closer to the river barbel. The Barbelgründling lives at the bottom of fast flowing brooks, in which the females lay their eggs one by one in cracks. Overall, however, little is known about its biology . Kullander et al. held Aulopyge huegelii mistaken for a synonym description to Schizothorax curvifrons Heckel. 1838

Identifying features

In contrast to the barbel and gudgeon , the barbel gudgeon is completely without scales. It is usually 13 cm, but a maximum of 25 cm long and has a laterally flattened body with a lower mouth and two pairs of barbels on the upper lip. The sideline has a wavy course with a yellow-green color and dark marbling and dots.

Occurrence

The barbel gudgeon has a very small range: it occurs exclusively in fast-flowing karst waters in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina . Such an endemic occurrence harbors the risk of population decline or extinction through hydraulic engineering measures within the residential waters . Due to this endangerment, the species was included in Appendix II of the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive with effect from July 1, 2013 .
