Aurel Anton

Aurel Anton (born March 30, 1928 in Sălbăgel , Timiș County ; † November 11, 2015 ) was a Romanian correspondence chess player and international master in correspondence chess (IM).

Correspondence chess

In 1959 Anton began to play correspondence chess.

In 1963 he became Romanian correspondence chess master, after which he qualified for participation in the 5th European championship by winning European tournaments. Here he came third behind the Swede Folke Ekström and the Belgian Jozef Boey .

At the 9th European Championship, he was European champion together with Alexander Vaisman in 1976 ; both had 11.5 points from 14 games, and the fine scoring according to Sonneborn-Berger also resulted in a tie.

In the finals of the 9th  ICCF World Chess Championship 1977-1983 Anton finished 4th, at the 11th  ICCF World Chess Championship 1983-1989, however, he was last. He also represented Romania at the 9th Correspondence Chess Olympiad.

In 1980 Anton was awarded the title of “International Correspondence Chess Master” (IM) at the ICCF Congress.

In the invitation tournament "40 Years of the BdF" held between 1986 and 1992, he came 11th out of 15 participants.

His number in correspondence chess is 2479 (as of 1993). Anton has been inactive since then.

Anton was an electrical engineer by profession.
