Aureliano Fernández Guerra

Aureliano Fernández-Guerra y Orbe (born June 16, 1816 in Pinar del Valle , Granada province , † September 7, 1894 in Madrid ) was a Spanish historian, antiquarian and writer .

There he studied philosophy and jurisprudence, became professor of history and literature in Granada and a few years later received the chair for foreign literatures at the University of Madrid . There he held high positions in the Ministry of Justice and Culture and was appointed a member of the Academia de la Historia in 1856, and in 1857 he was also admitted to the Spanish Academy and finally elected its lifelong secretary.

Fernández is one of the most prolific writers in Spain. As a poet, historian and playwright as well as a critic, he has achieved great things. His pieces are characterized by strong characteristics, dramatic liveliness and beautiful language. Among his lyrical poems, the "Odes and Romances" (1842–68) should be emphasized. His achievements in the historical and archaeological field are of great value. But the work that made him best known in the scientific world is his critical edition of the works of Francisco de Quevedo (Madrid 1852–59), with an excellent biography of the same and explanatory notes.

From 1861 he was a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences .
