The Aurkjosen is a largely ice-free basin in the East Antarctic Queen Maud Land, characterized by some old moraines . It is located on the east side of the Untersee in the Otto von Gruber Mountains of the Wohlthat massif .
The cauldron was discovered and mapped using aerial photographs during the German Antarctic Expedition (1938–1939) under the direction of Alfred Ritscher . A new mapping took place during the Third Norwegian Antarctic Expedition (1956–1960). Its Norwegian name translates into German as "scree throat".
