The Auster Islands are a small group of islands off the coast of the East Antarctic Mac Robertson Land . They are located at the northeastern end of the Robinson Group at a distance of 9 km north of Cape Daly .
They were mapped on the basis of survey work and aerial photographs that were carried out or were created as part of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions between 1959 and 1966. The Antarctic Names Committee of Australia (ANCA) named it after the nearby oyster Rookery , a breeding colony of emperor penguins , and the fact that the islands served as a base for exploring this colony. Both the islands and the penguin colony are named after the British aircraft manufacturer Auster Aircraft , whose models were used in the exploration work of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions.
