The 2001 season was the first season of the Australian Ice Hockey League , the highest Australian ice hockey league . The Adelaide Avalanche became champions for the first time in the club's history .

In the regular season, each of the three teams played a total of 16 games. The two best-placed teams qualified for the championship finals. Each team received two points for a win after regular time, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat after regular time.
