The 2012 season was the twelfth season of the Australian Ice Hockey League , the highest Australian ice hockey league . The Melbourne Ice became champions for the third time in the club's history .

In the regular season, each of the nine teams played a total of 24 games, with the league being divided into two conferences. The Bauer Conference had four teams, one less participant than the Easton Conference. The two best-placed teams in each conference qualified for the playoffs in which the champions were played. For a win after regular time each team received three points, for a win after overtime two points, for a defeat after overtime one point and for a defeat after regular time zero points.
