Australia | Cape Verde |
The Australian-Cape Verdean relations encompass the interstate relationship between Australia and Cape Verde . The countries have direct diplomatic relations.
The bilateral relations are good, but comparatively weak. The most important point of reference recently were the Australian-Cape Verdean development projects , especially in the field of education.
The bilateral economic relations are very weak because of the great distance and the small Cape Verdean market. Australia is therefore not one of Cape Verde's major economic partners.
history
After the uninhabited Cape Verde Islands were discovered by Portugal in the 15th century , they remained a Portuguese colony until their independence in 1975. Until then, the Australian-Cape Verdean relationship was determined by the Australian-Portuguese relations .
Due to the continued development of the country, especially since the 1990s, which finally led to the upgrading of Cape Verdes from a poorly developed country to a middle-income country in 2008, it did not become a focus of Australian development cooperation, which mainly focused on education issues.
In 2012 an Australian commission led by Ambassador Neil Mules, accredited in Cape Verde, met the host minister António Correia e Silva in the Cape Verde Ministry of Education . In addition to an evaluation of the Australian scholarship program for Cape Verdean university students in Australia, the main focus was on expanding technical cooperation between the two countries in other areas. At the time, Australia was Cape Verde's newest partner in its efforts to establish international partnerships for specialized training.
diplomacy
Australia does not have its own embassy in Cape Verde ; the Australian embassy in the Portuguese capital Lisbon is responsible .
Cape Verde also does not have its own embassy in Australia, which in turn is looked after by the Cape Verde embassy in Lisbon.
Mutual consulates are also not set up.
