history
During the course of European colonization in the 18th century, British immigrants brought horses to Australia . Breeds such as the Australian Stock Horse have been and are being bred to meet the needs of the country, in particular for large farms .
The AWHA was founded in Victoria (Australia) in the early 1970s . Originally the association was called "German Warmbood Horse Association" due to the importation of German riding horse stallions. The first import stallion was the Holstein stallion Flaneur in 1968 . In the 1970s and 1980s, warm- blooded and thoroughbred stallions as well as Anglo-Arabs were introduced and crossed with mares of different breeds. At the instigation of the AWHA, which wanted to keep up with the international sport horse standard, these uncontrolled matings were ended. Instead, there has been controlled breeding since 1985, and nationwide breeding guidelines have been adopted. About ten years after the beginning of the 21st century, the numbers of imported and domestically bred stallions approved for breeding are almost the same.
