The Austrian Traded Index ( ATX ) is the most important share index in Austria . The ATX, the performance of the 20 largest Austrian company with stock exchange listing appears. It serves as a base value for derivative financial instruments such as futures , warrants , certificates, etc. With the help of the ATX, statements can be made about the economic development of Austria. Twice a year (March and September) the composition of the ATX and the weighting of the shares are checked and adjusted. In contrast to the DAX , there are no dividendsor other capital distributions into the ATX. This means that the ATX, like most European indices, is calculated as a price index / price index . In order to be directly comparable with the DAX, the ATX Total Return (ATX TR), which also contains dividends, must be used.

calculation

The Austrian Traded Index (ATX) is continuously calculated and published during exchange trading. The index contains the shares of the 20 largest listed companies in Austria. The index changes solely due to fluctuations in share prices. The weighting is based on the market value in the free float (= market capitalization of the free float shares). Corporate actions such as stock splits have no (distorting) influence on the index. The ATX also serves as the base value for the futures and options traded on the Vienna Stock Exchange .

The composition of the ATX is reviewed every six months as part of the index committee meetings in March and September. Representatives of institutional investors, trading members at the Vienna Stock Exchange, financial institutions that issue financial products on the indices, academia and the Vienna Stock Exchange contribute their experience to the index committee. The main criteria for inclusion or deletion are capitalized free float and stock exchange turnover. With the semi-annual adjustment, a maximum of three ATX titles can be exchanged for non-ATX titles. The ATX is a registered trademark of Wiener Börse AG and represents a subset of the ATX Prime .

history

Historical overview

Austrian Traded Index (ATX) 1985–2020

The Austrian Traded Index (ATX) started on January 2, 1991 at 1,000 points and was calculated back to December 31, 1985. The index reached its lowest point so far on February 11, 1988 with 434.26 points. A very high price increase took place on August 22, 1991 with a plus of 7.91 percent. On October 28, 1997, the index lost 8.33 percent due to the currency crisis in Southeast Asia . It climbed to a final level of 1,628.56 points by May 26, 1998, after which it went down again to 1,003.72 on October 10, 2002. That was a decrease of 38.4 percent since May 1998. From then on, a steady increase set in, causing the ATX to exceed the 3,000 point mark for the first time by June 17, 2005. On January 30, 2006, the ATX closed at 4,002.64 points for the first time above the 4,000 point mark.

On May 22, 2006, the index fell 7.47 percent. The reasons given for this were the proximity to the weak Eastern stock exchanges, falling oil prices and extreme profit-taking. On July 9, 2007, the share index ended trading at an all-time high of 4,981.87 points. Since October 10, 2002, the profit has been 396.3 percent. The participation of Austrian companies in Eastern Europe and Southeastern Europe is cited as one of the reasons for this soaring , since over 80 percent of the companies in the index are active in the transition countries. In the course of the financial crisis from 2007 , however, these investments increasingly turned out to be a problem, which was reflected in the heavy losses of the ATX in the period between summer 2007 and summer 2009.

Volatility increased due to the fear surrounding the US real estate crisis . On October 27, 2008, the index suffered the biggest daily crash to date, at 9.75 percent, with 5 values losing over 10 percent and a further 11 values over 6 percent. The ATX had to accept the second largest daily loss a few weeks earlier on October 8, 2008 (8.71 percent). The ATX experienced the three largest daily increases in history in autumn 2008 as a result of the US government's rescue plans for the American financial sector. On October 13, 2008 the current record was held with 12.77 percent, the other two daily increases took place on September 19, 2008 (11.51 percent) and on November 24, 2008 (9.18 percent). On February 17, 2009 the ATX fell by 8.62 percent.

The index hit a new low on March 9, 2009, when it ended trading at 1,411.95 points. Since July 9, 2007 this corresponds to a decrease of 71.7 percent. The ATX experienced the next high price increase on May 10, 2010 (9.10 percent) due to the decision to set up the European Stabilization Mechanism . March 9, 2009 marks the turning point of the downward trend. From spring 2009 the ATX was on the way up again. By February 14, 2011, it rose by 112.5 percent to a closing level of 3,000.70 points.

The weakening of the global economy and the intensification of the euro crisis led to a slump in the Austrian benchmark index. On November 23, 2011, the ATX ended trading at 1,652.79 points. The loss since the high on February 14, 2011 is 44.9 percent. The announcement of new bond purchase programs by the European Central Bank and the US Federal Reserve , which are basically unlimited, led to a recovery in prices on the stock market. The monetary stimulus played a bigger role in the price formation than the global economic slowdown and the state of the companies. On January 9, 2013, the index closed at 2,494.76 points, 50.9 percent higher than on November 23, 2011.
