history

The company was founded in 1985 by Peter Unger . In June 2002, 80% of the company shares were around from the private equity firm Doughty Hanson & Co bought. An initial public offering of ATU planned for May 2004 was canceled and the company was then sold to the holding company KKR for 1.45 billion euros. Doughty Hanson & Co came back on board as minority owners of ATU as part of the change. In February 2010, KKR took over another 18.5 percent of the shares from co-owner Doughty Hanson & Co. In December 2013, the US investor Centerbridge, as ATU's largest creditor, took over the company from KKR; KKR retained a three percent stake in ATU. In February 2014, ATU announced that it would lay off 900 employees in Germany. Some branches were closed to adjust to sales. In spring 2015, 16 branches in the Netherlands and the Czech Republic were closed. ATU remained the branches in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

In July 2016, ATU hired Joachim Zims, a renowned renovator. In September 2016, a possible sale to the French competitor Mobivia became known; since there was no positive continuation prognosis, a three-week period began for averting bankruptcy or filing for bankruptcy. On December 8, 2016, shortly before the deadline, an agreement was reached on the workshop rents of almost half of the locations, thus averting the impending bankruptcy, so that Mobivia took over the majority of ATU. In February 2018, the tire manufacturer Michelin took over a fifth of the ATU company shares.

On April 20, 2020 the bankruptcy judge Winterthur initiated the bankruptcy of the Swiss branch. This affects the 6 branches in Switzerland with 75 employees.
