The automobile slewing crane Puma (ADK III / 3 type "Puma") is a two-axle automobile crane with a lifting capacity of 3 tons, which was manufactured from 1957 to 1963 in the VEB Hebezeugwerk Sebnitz . The crane was an addition to the model range for the 5-ton “ Panther ” crane , but was built in far fewer numbers.

During the development that began in 1956, the use of a series vehicle was again dispensed with for the undercarriage and instead an in-house design suitable for a crane was designed. As with the Panther, vehicle parts from the GDR commercial vehicle industry were used for the Puma. The 52 hp air-cooled motor came from the Robur Garant 32 , the axles and the pneumatic braking system from the IFA H6 . In contrast to the Panther, the Puma was built as a forward control vehicle with a pontoon body . The engine is stored on a trolley, which should make repairs easier. The vehicle reaches a top speed of 45 km / h and has a climbing ability of 12%, when carrying a trailer with a total weight of up to 3 tons it drops to 5%.

In crane operation, the Puma is operated from the driver's seat, which is rotated 180 °. The steering column must be repositioned accordingly. Lateral supports have been dispensed with, the maximum load capacity of 3 tons with a dead weight of 9 tons is limited to 1.2 m from the outer edge of the vehicle, the range of rotation is 360 °. Under load, the crane has a gradeability of 5% at a maximum travel speed of 5 km / h. Without load, the boom can be extended by 1.5 m by hand using a ball bearing extension.

Electrically operated motor grabs with volumes of 0.3 and 0.4 m³ were offered for handling bulk goods. However, these are dependent on an external power supply, as the fully hydraulic crane does not have a diesel-electric drive .

The vehicle logo is a trapezoid that widens towards the top and is inscribed with a "P" with a disproportionately large arch. Under the arch of the “P” there are the letters “UMA” with different butting, and a stylized puma is depicted in the inner area of the “P” .

ADK III / 3-G5

In order to meet the needs of the National People's Army for crane vehicles, the development of the ADK III / 3-G5 assembly crane began in 1959, where the Puma's crane structure was mounted with a modified frame on the chassis of the all-terrain IFA G5 . Experience already existed, since development to adapt the Bleichert crane structure to G5 chassis had started at Bleichert in Leipzig six years earlier .

In contrast to the Bleichert crane, the ADK III / 3-G5 is operated from the driver's cab like the Puma and the vehicle can be driven under load to a limited extent in unsupported crane operation. The hydraulically operated superstructure has a lower clearance profile and the vehicle is shorter and lower in transport than with a Bleichert superstructure. However, the maximum load of 3 tons is only achieved up to 1.25 m behind the vehicle, while 2.5 m is possible with the Bleichert crane.

From 1960 to 1964, 166 vehicles of this type and a further 59 ADK III / 3-G5 A tow trucks were built.
