features

butterfly

The moths reach a wingspan of 37 to 40 millimeters. The upper side of the forewings is gray-brown in color, sometimes with a light purple-brown dust. The area in the middle field between the median vein and the inner edge is dark brown and is delimited by the inner and outer, each light brown colored transverse line. The silver-white shimmering gamma symbol is always divided. The upper side of the hind wing is colored light gray-brown and shows a slightly darkened outer edge. There is a dense tuft of hair on the head of the butterfly. The body is furry and has other short tufts of hair.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars reach a length of 25 millimeters, are colored green and have a narrow whitish side stripe. Short, thin, light hairs protrude from small dark point warts.

Similar species

The Silver Y ( Autographa gamma ) shows, as well as Autographa gamma macro each an undivided gamma characters.

Distribution and occurrence

The distribution area of Autographa nigrisigna extends through India to the foot of the Himalayas and through Russia and China to Japan . The species prefers to colonize agricultural areas.

Way of life

The moths fly at different times depending on their climatic habitat: in India between November and March in four generations, in Japan between July and October in two to three generations. You visit artificial light sources . The females lay the eggs individually or in small groups on the underside of fresh or withered leaves, petioles or branch tips, and sometimes on the upper side of leaves or stems. Studies in Japan showed that they show a particularly active flight behavior after mating. The caterpillars feed polyphagous, preferably on the leaves of cabbage species ( Brassica ) or chickpeas ( Cicer arietinum ). They occur on these plants as an agricultural pest in some areas and are fought with insecticides and Bacillus thuringiensis . Attempts are also being made to control the moths with pheromone traps .
