Autonomy was an English nu-metal band from Daventry that was formed in 1998 and split up around 2001.

history

The band was formed in 1998 by singers Terry Muller and Jay Spencer. In the same year Matt Cosentino came on as guitarist, Rich Bradley as drummer and Paul Harrison as bassist. The first local appearances followed later that year, while the first songs were published online. In late 1999, the group contributed the song Thrown Like Dice for the sampler Youth Millenium . In early 2000, a demo was released that had been recorded the year before, which allowed the band to increase their popularity so that they were able to play in Manchester at the In the City Showcase in September . She then signed a contract with Earache Records. Shortly afterwards, the title song of the demo S / K / N / S was played nationally on the radio, including on the Radio One Rock Show and on TotalRock . In January 2001, singer Olly Eldershaw closed the gap created by the departure of founder Muller. With producer Dave Dominguez , who had already worked for Limp Bizkit , Papa Roach and Staind , the recordings for the debut album began. The recordings took place at DEP Studios in Birmingham in May and June 2001. The album was mixed in August in Los Angeles . Eldershaw left the band during the recording. Dave Dominguez then brokered the US anchor Soup Carpenter as a replacement. Carpenter was previously seen on the left in The Wild Seventies and Behind the Moon and was a roommate of Chino Moreno during his college days , with whom he continued to be friends. The self-titled album was released in November 2001 on Earache Records. In the meantime the band has split up.

style

According to the bio on earache.com , the band initially tried to compete with other extreme nu metal bands such as Raging Speedhorn and Defenestration . Initial influences such as Limp Bizkit and Incubus are noted on the website's band bio . According to Christian Graf in the Nu Metal and Crossover Lexicon , the band, like Raging Speedhorn and Defenestration, call their music "Extreme Nu Metal", but experts call it crossover . Joel McIver reached into his book The Next Generation of Rock & Punk Nu Metal to the comparison to Raging Speed Horn and Defenestration, but noted that Autonomy a greater focus on hip-hop - beats places like Limp Bizkit. Later in their career, however, the band became more aggressive.
